Project Description

SOCIAL KITCHEN

In the suburban quarters of Chirpan and two small surrounding villages, live ethnic Turks and Bulgarian Gypsies. The social conditions of these places are extremely poor and run down. There is an absence of local medical and dental assistance, no professional social care or compulsory education, minuscule pensions for the elderly and soaring unemployment figures. Inside these minority communities there are many street children and others from dysfunctional homes to whom Door of Hope gives free meals and drinks too.

A wonderful Bulgarian couple called Michael and Boyana Kirov have given their lives to serve their large village and the marginalised people who live there. From the proceeds that Door of Hope supports them with, we are able to feed not only the young but also distribute food parcels to the elderly and vulnerable in Chirpan. Many of the elderly are left on their own, this is due to their partners dying and their children growing up, leaving the family home. Sadly, it is not uncommon to see the  grandmother surrounded by her grandchildren not being able to cope because the mother or father has left the family home. This can also have a reverse effect. On one occasion Door of Hope witnessed a granddaughter throwing her grandmother out of the ‘home’ because she had become too much of a burden. Interestingly though, rarely have we found these ladies complaining.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

In 2019 the education and social kitchen feeding centre was built to serve this community in Chirpan. However, with the lack of financial support that Michael and Boyana received for these people, Door of Hope felt privileged to be part of the growth of this community.

With the help of volunteers, Michael and Boyana distribute food to the elderly who are also blind, disabled and too old to leave their homes. The times Door of Hope has visited this village, we’re able to go out on the rounds and help deliver the food to the elderly. It has been distressing to see so many people living in such awful circumstances. On one visit we walked towards a run down crumpled house and observed this house had no electricity and running water. It had one large dark room with no furniture, a filthy lumpy floor and an odour that you couldn’t describe. There lived a grandmother  who was struggling to cope with her 8 grandchildren due to the mother leaving the family home.

Being fed and cared for should not be a privilege, so Michael and Boyana are determined to see that the best possible food can be supplied for these children and elderly, as well as helping them to be self-sufficient. Your continuous contributions help us bring a degree of comfort to these forgotten people. In the area where we work, no one else is assisting the people from this community, only Door of Hope.
